The Changing Seasons of One’s Professional Journey and Grounding to One’s Own Values
Fourteen years in healthcare feels both like a lifetime and the blink of an eye. When I first stepped into mental health nursing more than a decade ago, I could never have imagined where I would eventually find myself. Nursing often comes with an unspoken assumption: you choose a specialty, gain experience, and progress in a linear fashion toward senior clinical practice, education, or management. But real professional growth is rarely linear. It bends, pauses, accelerates, and sometimes circles back.
I’ve worked across these different facets of advanced practice, searching for the place where I could truly plant myself. Yet the journey has been anything but straightforward. Alongside professional transitions came personal ones. Seasons of gratitude, doubt, grief, and the quiet questioning that often sits beneath major decisions. Did I make the right choice? Should I have said yes to something else? Every yes after all is also a no to another possibility.
As I reflect on my journey, one truth has become clearer and more grounding: my values have carried me through every season. It is the compass that steadies me, the anchor that keeps my work meaningful. Whether I was at the frontline, educating, or leading services, the moments that mattered most were always the same. It is seeing people believe in themselves, witnessing growth, and supporting change that improves the lives of those we care for. When practice is rooted in values, the work becomes more than tasks or roles; it becomes contribution.
This is the foundation on which I am building Florencio Praxis.
Florencio Praxis is my way of bringing together my practice, experience, and skills into a consultancy framework that supports professionals and organisations who are ready to grow, evolve, and own their season of practice. My intent is simple: to walk alongside others as they navigate their own transitions, just as I have navigated mine.
Right now, the surroundings may still feel foggy — much like the winter mornings in Auckland as I write this in July 2026. But fog does not erase the path, it only softens the view. When direction is clear and values are steady, the way forward remains present. Eventually, the fog lifts, the day reveals itself, and the season shifts once again.
Florencio Praxis begins here. Grounded, intentional, and ready for what the next season brings.
